🚀 Getting Started

Getting BidBetter up and running takes less than 5 minutes. Here's the complete first-time setup.

Step 1 — Create Your Free Account

Head to the Sign Up page and register with your email address. We'll send a 6-digit verification code to confirm your email before you create a password.

Step 2 — Upload Your Resume

After logging in, go to your dashboard and upload your resume. BidBetter uses your resume to compare against each job you score. You can upload multiple resumes and set a default one.

💡
Tip: Keep your resume up to date. The more accurate and complete your resume is, the better BidBetter's scoring and proposal generation will be.

Step 3 — Set Your Preferences

Tell BidBetter what kind of work you want (and don't want). Set your minimum hourly rate, preferred job types, and any hard exclusions — industries or keywords you never want to see in your results.

Step 4 — Install the Chrome Extension

Download the BidBetter Chrome Extension from the Dashboard. Once installed, it automatically detects job listings on Upwork, LinkedIn, and Indeed as you browse, and shows you the score overlay without any copy-pasting.

ℹ️
No Chrome extension? You can also score jobs manually by copying and pasting the job description directly into the BidBetter dashboard.

🎯 Understanding Your Score

BidBetter gives every job a score from 1 to 10. The score reflects how well the job matches your resume, skills, experience, and preferences — taking your hard exclusions and red flags into account.

ScoreVerdictWhat It Means
1 – 4❌ SkipPoor match. Missing key skills, or red flags detected. Not worth your time.
5 – 6🟡 ConsiderPartial match. Could work with some negotiation, or if you're light on leads.
7 – 8✅ Good FitStrong match. Apply with a targeted proposal. Minor gaps only.
9 – 10🌟 ExcellentNear-perfect fit. High priority. Get your proposal in fast.

What Factors Affect the Score?

The score is calculated by analysing multiple dimensions of the job and your profile:

  • Skill match — How many required skills appear in your resume
  • Experience alignment — Whether your experience level matches what's asked
  • Rate compatibility — Whether the job budget meets your minimum
  • Your exclusions — Jobs matching your hard exclusion keywords score lower automatically
  • Red flags — Detected warning signs reduce the score accordingly
  • Work type preferences — Remote, contract, fixed-price, etc.
⚠️
Scores are a guide, not a guarantee. They help you prioritise, but your own judgement on fit and opportunity is always the final call.

🚨 Red Flag Analyzer

The Red Flag Analyzer reads the full job description and client history to detect warning patterns before you invest time in an application. Flags are categorised by severity.

High Severity
Toxic Working StyleLanguage that implies poor work-life boundaries, micromanagement, or unrealistic delivery expectations.
High Severity
Scope Creep RiskVague or single-sentence briefs for complex deliverables — a sign of moving goalposts and endless revisions.
Medium Severity
Compensation RiskBudget is below your stated minimum rate, or the client's average paid rate is suspiciously low.
Medium Severity
Requirement InflationAsking for expert-level skills at junior-level pay, or requesting unreasonably broad expertise.
Low Severity
Minor ConcernSmall inconsistencies or minor warning phrases. Offset if the client has a strong review track record.
💡
High severity flags automatically reduce the overall job score, even if the skill match is strong.

✍️ AI Proposal Writer

BidBetter generates a fully personalised proposal based on the specific job description and your resume. Each proposal is unique — not a template.

What's Included in the Proposal?

  • A personalised opening that addresses the client's core problem
  • Relevant experience pulled directly from your resume
  • A proposed approach or delivery plan based on the job scope
  • A professional, confident closing with your rate or availability

How to Use It

1

Score the Job

Score the job first so the AI has the full context of the role.

2

Click "Write Proposal"

Find the proposal button in the score panel or dashboard.

3

Review & Edit

Read the draft, make any personal edits, then copy to clipboard.

4

Send It

Paste it into the platform and submit. Done in under a minute.

⚠️
Always review before sending. AI proposals are a strong starting point — add your personal voice and any specific details the AI might have missed.

🤖 ATS Scanner

Many employers, especially on LinkedIn and Indeed, run resumes through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) before a human ever sees them. The ATS Scanner checks whether your resume would pass for a specific job.

What It Checks

  • Presence of key required and preferred skills from the job description
  • Missing keywords that ATS systems commonly filter for
  • Overall keyword density and relevance

How to Improve Your ATS Score

  • Add missing keywords naturally to your resume's skills or experience sections
  • Match the job's terminology — use the exact words the job description uses
  • Upload a tailored resume for high-priority applications
ℹ️
The ATS Scanner uses the resume you have set as default. You can switch to a different resume from the Score panel before running the scan.

💬 Application Q&A

Many job applications include custom screening questions. BidBetter's Q&A tool automatically generates answers to those questions using your resume and the job description as context.

How to Use It

  1. After scoring a job, look for the Q&A section in the score panel.
  2. Paste each screening question into the input field.
  3. BidBetter generates a relevant, professional answer based on your experience.
  4. Review, personalise if needed, and copy into the application form.
💡
The Q&A answers are crafted from your actual resume — not generic filler. The more detailed your resume, the better the answers.

📄 Managing Resumes

BidBetter supports multiple resumes so you can target different types of roles without changing your profile.

Uploading a Resume

  1. Go to your Dashboard → Resumes.
  2. Click Upload Resume and select your PDF or Word file.
  3. Give it a name (e.g., "Marketing Resume", "Tech Resume").
  4. The resume is parsed and stored securely.

Setting a Default Resume

All scoring and proposals use your default resume unless you manually select a different one. To set a default, click the star (⭐) icon next to any resume in your resume list.

Supported File Types

  • PDF (recommended)
  • Word (.docx)
  • Plain text (.txt)
⚠️
Do not include sensitive personal information like your home address, national ID, or bank details in the resume you upload to BidBetter.

⚙️ Preferences & Exclusions

Preferences tell BidBetter what your ideal job looks like. Exclusions tell it what to filter out entirely.

Work Preferences

  • Minimum Hourly Rate — Jobs below this rate will be flagged and scored lower
  • Job Type — Hourly, fixed-price, or both
  • Work Style — Remote only, hybrid, or on-site
  • Availability — Full-time equivalent, part-time, or project-based

Hard Exclusions

Hard exclusions are keywords or phrases that, if found in a job description, will significantly reduce its score regardless of other factors. Use these for:

  • Industries you won't work in (e.g., "gambling", "adult content")
  • Working styles you avoid (e.g., "equity only", "unpaid internship")
  • Technologies you don't want to work with

Function Exclusions

Function exclusions let you exclude specific job functions or roles (e.g., "Customer Support", "Data Entry") from your scoring results.

💡
Be specific with exclusion keywords. "Sales" might be too broad — "cold calling" or "commission only" might be what you actually mean.

🖥️ Dashboard Overview

The BidBetter dashboard is your home base. Here's what you'll find:

  • Usage Stats — How many jobs you've scored, proposals written, and usage remaining on your current plan

  • Resumes — Upload, manage, and switch between your resumes
  • Score a Job — Manually paste a job description and score it without the extension
  • Preferences — Set your work preferences, minimum rate, and exclusions
  • Extension Download — Download link for the Chrome extension
ℹ️
Your usage resets monthly. Check the dashboard to see how many scores and proposals you have remaining in your current billing period.
